ABOUT FILAMENTAL FURNITURE

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3Dprinting, is a true manifestation of future sustainable production. This new technology will change the world as it unveils a new horizon for ultra-efficient material use as well as construction solutions and esthetics in general. Filamental aims to explore the uncharted possibilities of additive manufacturing by regarding the printer-robot as a choreographer of filament and seeks to utilize the unique traits and esthetics that comes with its inherent abilities.

Throughout the process of understanding the robot’s choreography and abilities we have learned to design with the filament in mind. To design filamental furniture.

In its purest form, the robots dance-like movement is a language of simplicity and elegance. Watching the making is like staring into a flame, it’s hard to not to gaze as the robot’s nozzle precisely stacks the filaments in tentacular shapes and spiraling circuits. Every change of direction generates a discrete ”smeared” finish as the pressure changes from the robots decreasing speed while it navigates its digital tracks. As one layer is finished, the formula hardens ready for the next layer to fuse onto it.  The robot continues to carefully balance the formula on top of each layer until the print is completed. After a short cooldown, the parts are instantly ready to be assembled and used.

The resulting creations are of a whole new breed of objects. The furniture have members as elegant as bentwood and a finish as tactile and repetitive as Velcro, but with the ability to effortlessly imbue simplistic connectors to latch on to other parts. Thin dimensions offers objects with the flex of a rib that enables for innovative and quick assembly. The combination of robotic precision and the slight irregularity from the nozzles pressure creates a part vivid part technical look, like something out of a HR Giger-illustration. The esthetics of future furniture production.

Filamental is a startup under Industrial Poetry, a multidisciplinary architecture studio based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Industrial Poetry conducts design studies of innovative materials and manufacturing techniques in search of applications that supports the manufacturing industries transition into a circular economy. Upon finding a potential application, the studio starts a business together with investors.

Apart from conducting design studies, the studio performs architectural-, interior-, and design projects for both commercial and private clients.
